The Western Kings dropped a series opener to the St. John’s Privateers 4-2 Saturday night.

The Kings opened the scoring as Chad Jones scored on Privateers’ goalie Chris Smith.  Just four minutes later, the Privateers scored as Peter Kavanagh scored to tie the game at 1-1.

The Privateers took the lead in the second period as Shayne Kavanagh scored on a scramble in front of the net.  The Kings would not give up however, as Josh Taylor scored in the third to tie the score at 2-2.  Lucas Lush scored the eventual game winner as he sped by the Kings defense and dumped the puck to teammate Brett Vokey, who scored with a wrist shot into the top of the net.

Privateers would add an insurance marker as Andrew Haley scored just under 9 minutes remaining to give the Privateers a 4-2 lead.

The Kings put a push on late in the third as Privateers Shayne Kavanagh took two minor penalties, forcing his team to scramble for the rest of the third.  Great defensive work by the St. John’s crew kept the Wings from scoring.

Smith made 32 saves for the win and the Kings McCarthy stopped 34.
