NLSHL Weekend Roundup

Here’s the weekend roundup for the latest action in the Newfoundland and Labrador Senior Hockey League (NLSHL) action:

Grand Falls-Windsor Cataracts – 4 vs Western Royals – 2

The Grand Falls-Windsor Cataracts defeated the Western Royals on home ice during Saturday’s matchup.  The Royals new goaltender Bryan Gillis faced 34 in his league debut.

The Cataracts opened the scoring at 7:12 of the first period when Michael Brent beat the Royals goalie.  Mark Robinson of the Royals tied the score at 14:03 with a power play marker.  Blake Gallagher of the Cataracts put the Cats up 2-1 heading into the first intermission.

The second period saw the Grand Falls-Windsor Cataracts coming out hard, picking up an early goal when Ryan Graham scored at 1:25 of the first on the power play.  Then Blake Gallagher picked up his second of the night at 15:08, scoring once again on the power play.  Mark Robinson scored the Royals second of the night, his second power play marker of the contest.

There was no scoring in the third period even though the Royals dominated play, outshooting the Cataracts 12-6.

Clarenville Caribous – 4 vs Eastlink Cee Bee Stars – 2

The Clarenville Caribous continued their winning ways of late, defeating the Eastlink Cee Bee Stars by a score of 4-2 in Saturday night action.

The Caribous jumped out to an early 1-0 league when Brad Crann scored at the 1:44 mark of the first period.  The Cee Bees responded less than a minute later when recently acquired Chris Hulit scored on the power play to even the score at 1-1.  Brandon Roach scored for the Caribous on a power play at 14:02 to give the Caribous a 2-1 lead heading into the dressing room after the first period of play.

With the second period being a back-and-forth effort with each team having their chances, the score remained 2-1 for the Caribous after 2 periods of play.

The third period saw the East Link Cee Bee Stars score at the 4:21 mark.  Terry Dyke picked up the even strength marker, evening the score at 2-2.  Less than three minutes later the Caribous went up 3-2 when Ryan Desrosiers scored, giving the Caribous the lead.  Matt Bragg sealed the game at 19:15 of the third with an empty net goal.

Grand Falls-Windsor Cataracts – 6 vs Western Royals – 5

The Western Royals dropped its second game at home on Sunday night, being swept by the Grand Falls-Windsor Cataracts.  The Cataracts picked up its eleventh win on the season.

The Royals came out firing in the first period, scoring at the 5:52 mark of the first when Michael Hynes netted a power play marker.  Brandon Nicholas of the Cataracts responded at 9:19, beating the Royals goalie. At 10:08 the Royals took the lead when Justin Barbour scored putting the Royals up 2-1 after one period of play.

The second period saw the Cataracts step up its play when Micheal Brent scored to tie the game at 2 a piece.  The Royals Darren Langdon gave his team the lead at 13:04 but the Cataracts Andrew Pearcey tied the game at 3-3 late in the second period.

In the third, the Royals Justin Barbour scored his second of the night, putting the Western Royals up 4-3 at the 4:16 mark of the third period.  Cataracts responded with a power play goal at 10:21 when Matthew Quinn tied the score at 4.  Ashley Coles of the Western Royals gave his team the lead once again, scoring to make the score 5-4 with just 9 minutes remaining.  The Cataracts tied the score just 17 seconds later on a marker by Cody Roach.  Michael Brent sealed the victory at 15:03 of the third.
