IceCaps Swept at Home

TheSt. John’sIceCaps dropped below the .500 mark on Saturday night as the visiting Springfield Falcons swept the strugglingSt. John’ssquad.  Ryan Johansen scored a goal and added two assists for the Falcons as they defeated theSt. John’sIceCaps by a score of 4-2.

St. John’sfired 48 shots on the Falcons’ goalie Curtis McElhinney and he stopped 46 to give his team the victory.  The Falcons opened the scoring just 24 seconds into the second period when Matt Calvert slid a puck past the IceCaps goalie Ryan Johansen making it 1-0.  Springfield then took a 2-0 lead as they scored just a few minutes later when Tomas Kubalik deflected Tim Erixon’s point shot past the IceCaps goaltender.

Later in the period,St. John’scut the lead to 2-1 when they scored on the power play.  The Falcons regained their 2-goal lead later when Jonathan Audy-Marchessault scored, giving theSpringfieldcrew a 3-1 advantage after 2 periods of play.

St. John’spulled to within a single goal scoring at the 14:06 mark of the third period and even after outshooting the Falcons 16-8 in the final period, the IceCaps were unable to come away with a point after the Falcons scored an empty netter, giving them the 4-2 victory, sweeping the St. John’s team at home and handing them their third straight loss.
