IceCaps Scuttled by Pirates

The St. John’s IceCaps made a valiant effort in its comeback bid against the Portland Pirates but fall just short, dropping a game 5-4 to the Portland squad. With St. John’s home for an extended home stand, they were hopeful for a second win against the Pirates.

Portland stormed out to a 2-0 lead when the Pirates Hextall and Rieder scored during the opening period. St. John’s pulled to within 1 goal late in the first period when Lipon scored on the power play to make it 2-1 Pirates at the end of the first.

St. John’s battled to tie the game in the second period scoring early in the period but would then have the Portland Pirates storm back scoring three unanswerd goals, bringing the score to 5-2 at the end of the second period.

The IceCaps battled back in the third period, scoring 2 goals. Albert scored his fourth of the season to make the score 5-3 and then just under 2-minutes later, the IceCaps Mouillierat scored to make it 5-4. That’s where the comeback halted.

St. John’s goalies Olkinuora and Pasquale combined to face 34 shots with the Portland goalie Domingue facing 32 shots to pick up the win.
