The St. John’s IceCaps managed to hold off the visiting Portland Pirates and secure a 4-2 with a late third period empty net goal on Tuesday, January 7, 2013.

The IceCaps had to come back from behind when Portland jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first period.  Portland’s Lessio scored his 10th goal of the season and it looked as if that would hold up until the end of the period.  However, St. John’s replied with just 6 seconds remaining in the first period to even the score at 1-1.

Coming out on fire in the second, the IceCaps took the lead 2-1 when Klingberg scored his 9th of the season for the IceCaps and later extended their lead to 3-1 in the third period when the IceCaps Gordon scored his 12th of the season.

The Portland crew didn’t give up and battled back to within a single goal when the Pirates’ Rieder scored his 11th of the season. St. John’s secured the win with the Pirates pressing late in the third period with the goalie pulled and an extra attacker on the ice. Klingberg scored his second of the game, an empty netter with just 26 seconds remaining.
