Gander Flyers Win Against Royals

The Gander Flyers dumped the Western Royals by a score of 6-2 in Newfoundland Senior Hockey League Action. With the win, the Gander Flyers move from the basement of the NLSHL to 5th place ahead of the defending Herder Memorial Champions Eastlink CeeBee Stars. With othe weekend match-ups canceled because of weather and power outages, this was the lone game in the league just after the holiday break.

The Flyers jumped out to an early lead when Sean Wadden of the Flyers opened the scoring at 1:22 on a goal assisted by Chad Locke. The Flyers continued their dominance scoring at 4:21 of the opening period when Grand Donovan scored an unassisted short handed goal. Chad Locke picked up his second point of the game when he scored at 6:07 of the opening frame on a goal assisted by Steve Brazil and Grand Donovan.

The second period saw the Flyers continue their impressive play when James Lanning scored an unassisted marker at 4:36. Brad Slaney scored at 6:42 on a goal assisted by Ryan Matheson and James Lanning. The second period also saw the Western Royals Parker Deighan, one of their imports, being ejected from the game, receiving a 5-minute major and a game misconduct for checking from behind.

The third period saw Chad Locke pick up his third point of the game when he assisted on Matthew Quinn’s goal at 8:20.

The Western Royals tried to close the gap and scored twice in late in the third period when Michael Hynes scored on the power play on a goal assisted by Darren Langdon and Mark Robinson. Just Barbour added the Royals second goal closing the score to 6-2 but the comeback was not meant to be.

The Western Royals needed to win agains the Flyers as they are battling for a playoff spot in the Newfoundland Senior Hockey League.
